Be an Angel for the Homeless Cats and Dogs in Lakewood!
Spread holiday cheer and help a homeless pet in need! Honor your own furry angel by donating $5.00 to the Citizens Committee for the Lakewood Animal Shelter (CCLAS) Angel Trees. CCLAS will add an ornament with your pet's name at the Angel Tree location of your choice, the Lakewood Public Library or Pets General Store. Donations can be sent via PayPal, mailed in via a brochure from the Lakewood Public Library, or made in person at Pets General Store.
All donations are used to help with adoption efforts, spay and neuter costs, foster care programs and improving the general living conditions at the Lakewood Animal Shelter.
The underlying mission of CCLAS is to improve and protect the lives of Lakewood's companion pet population. By providing volunteer and financial resources, CCLAS aides in the adoption of abandoned animals, including, but not limited to, cats and dogs, and aides in their well being during their stay at the Lakewood Animal Shelter.

"Skinny" Minnie
Sadly, we lost another foster kitty today, "Skinny" Minnie.
She was kindly fostered by a CCLAS supporter for the past month. From what we could tell, Minnie had a rough life from being both ear-tipped and declawed, although we know she spent her last month in a loving home, enjoying the company of her foster's dog, Guinness. She was placed into foster care because she was a malnourished senior cat, weighing only 4lbs, 14oz. She had a nice holiday weekend with her temporary family and had a new furever home lined up. Unfortunately she passed unexpectedly today while the foster was at work. She came home to find her curled up peacefully in her litter box. Feel free to share your gratitude and condolences with Minnie's foster below.

Foster home needed for littermates ASAP
CCLAS is desperately looking for a foster who can help nurse Thelma & Louise back to good heath. Both have fatty liver disease, from being abandon on the streets of Lakewood too long. CCLAS will cover their medical cost - daily duties include force feeding in a quiet comfortable environment. Currently they are living in a board member's small bathroom. Can you help? Leave a message below or email CCLASpets@gmail.com.

Prays for littermates Thelma & Louise
Sadly our favorite sisters, Thelma & Louise, are gravely ill.
Just a few days after their adoption, the new family felt something was very wrong with the girls when they stopped eating. Fortunately the new owners reached out to CCLAS, although we were stumped at first by their persistent symptoms, we sought the expertise of the vets at the Lakewood Animal Hospital. The girls were both admitted yesterday, suffering from Fatty Liver Disease, after starving from being abandoned on the streets too long. While their prognosis does not look good, please keep the sisters in your thoughts and prays, and CCLAS, with the Lakewood Animal Hospital, will do our best to help them.

Take a gamble on Keno and Nifty!
Even though "kitten season" is starting to wind down, the shelter remains full! Keno and Nifty are just two of the cats available for adoption through the Lakewood Animal Shelter. Both are tough little kitties - during a recent flu outbreak at the shelter where many of our cats had to recover in foster care, Keno and Nifty prevailed. Keno is waiting patiently to meet a friend who will play with him fur-ever...
...while Nifty can't wait to snuggle up in your lap!
Keno (#315) and Nifty (#303) are available for adoption at the Lakewood Animal Shelter, located in the Cleveland Metroparks, on Cleveland Metroparks Drive (Valley Parkway) just south of the Dog Park. Adoption fees are always - only $35. The fee includes a deworming treatment, an initial vaccination, flea prevention treatment, a collar with identification tag, a cardboard carrier, and an initial wellness exam with a second vaccination from participating local veterinarians. How often does your cat see the vet?
This week is Take Your Cat to the Vet Week.
On average, cats visit the veterinarian less than half as often as dogs. Assumptions that cats don’t require the same care as dogs or don’t get ill as often just aren’t true. The CATalyst Council supports the American Veterinary Medical Association’s position that twice-yearly wellness exams for all cats are justifiable. More frequent vet visits may be required for seniors and geriatrics, and for cats with medical and behavioral conditions.
To learn some tips about preparing your cat for an examination, visit the CATalyst Council's website.

Why Ohio needs better laws regarding breeding to protect companion animals
A lot of people are learning today about the unfortunate situation in Richland County regarding the nearly 280 Chihuahuas and 40 Shar-Peis that are being removed from deplorable conditions at the Windsong Acres Kennel. Autumn Ziemba of FOX8 was able to report first hand about the heartbreak for the dogs, volunteers, and kennel owners.
Although charges will not be filled on the kennel owner due to the sad fact that she's dying in hospice of terminal cancer and her husband passed away suddenly this weekend, it doesn't change the reality that she took advantage of Ohio's relaxed laws regarding when it comes to breeding.
A similar scene of today unfolded approximately three years ago in New Jersey. According to a press release by the Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey, "The scene was disturbing, but not entirely unexpected for Bruce Sanchez, General Manager at Associated Humane Societies’ Tinton Falls Animal Care Center -- over 200 little Chihuahuas stacked up in two-foot by two-foot cages and Shar Peis, some sick, many unkempt and all seemingly oblivious to their lifestyle." While the press releases focuses on the heartache and well being of the dogs, there are many unflattering warnings about the abusive nature of the Windsong Acres Kennels and by Edith Buchko. One post on http://dogrescuerslife.blogspot.com stated that she was convicted of animal cruelty in 1991 and in 1996; her ability to sell with AKC papers was terminated.
Regardless if Edith Bucko truly cared for the dogs or thought of them as products to sell, she knew if she moved to Ohio she would be able to "continue her breeding business as usual" due to Ohio's lack "...any zoning or number restrictions."
Ohio legislation is consider a bill S.B. 130, which is also been coined by New Beginnings Animal Shelter of Pickerington, Ohio, the "Puppy Mill Breeder Protection' Bill." Hopefully the story about Windsong Acres Kennel in Ohio will shed some light on why we need reasonable regulation and oversight when it comes to breeders of companion animals in Ohio.
