CCLAS has been overwhelmed with orphan kittens and newborn puppies the past month! With over 11 puppies, 20 kittens and only two moms, we need baby pet food to keep these youngsters healthy.

Patrick's positive report!

Patrick Update:

Patrick is no longer a super skinny guy! His weight is great, he’s on a healthy diet of wet food twice a day, and a small amount of dry to nibble on during the day. Research shows amputee cats tend to “comfort eat” and with less physical activity, it puts them at risk for diabetes & additional stress on joints.

His weight bearing leg is still not completely healed, so that has slowed down his physical therapy, mobility and balance.

Patrick’s foster works with him daily on his walking and climbing skills – trying to make a game of it by using catnip and treats to motivate and reward him. Patrick really enjoys looking out the window, so that serves as motivation to climb also, and he can finally climb up and down his cat tree without assistance now.

His balance is still a real struggle and his over compensation causes stress on his weight bearing leg, hips and back. He relies on his claws a lot to help pull himself up and steady himself on the sofa or cat tree. He can walk, but only for short distances, and then resorts to a scoot and crawl on the carpet, when his leg is too sore to walk.

He is still having mood swings due to frustration, but they are less severe than the tantrums, depression and withdrawal he exhibited before. The cat tree, purchased with donated funds, has helped redirect his energy, build his confidence with balance, and being able to look out the window really seems to calm him.

Patrick is not comfortable with outside visitors yet, so it will be some time before his foster feels he’s ready to start the adoption inquiry process. Thank you for everyone’s support and kind words.

The sweetest angel we have is Angel - a lovable female tabby cat that is looking for the chance to be part of a family in a nice home.

Angel survived two polar vortexes outside, after she was abandoned by her previous owner in the West End last fall. Angel has already been spayed, plus she's recently vaccinated and treated with flea prevention medicine. Angel would enjoy living in a stress-free environment in a loving home among those who can appreciate how beautiful of a cat she is! Right now, she prefers to be in a one-cat household, but we are hopeful that she may grow to appreciate other feline companions in the home.

Angel will give you attention and show her love and appreciation by giving you head bumps. Looking for a cat that you can bond with? Angel is the one! She will meow and purr when getting petted and rubbed, along with attention in general. She has also tested negative for FeLV/FIV and has a clean bill of health.

A St. Patrick's Day update about our Pat!

Happy St. Patrick's Day. Here’s an update about our Patty from his foster mom:

"It's been very touch and go; he has been very uncomfortable, other than keeping the lights off and the place quiet, there's not much I can do to that soothes him. He’s not sleeping well, so neither am I. His temperament has been really affected, but considering all the trauma he has endured in a short amount of time, it is to be expected. He'll eat a little bit of wet just twice a day. Sometimes he hops, sometimes he scoots, but mostly he cries for me to pick him up & take him to his food, litter box or basket. He reluctantly lets me change his dressings."

As of Monday morning, we readmitted Patrick back to LAH for wound care. He had pulled the stitches from his tail and we were concerned about an infection. He's expected to stay there for at least a few days.

Thank you for those who inquired about adopting Patrick. We have a few names on the list, but right now, we're focused on Patrick's recovery and hope to start the adoption review process in a month or so. We need time to assess what Patrick's personality will be like post-op, in order to match him to the appropriate home. When he's ready, we'll send out our CCLAS adoption inquiry forms to the interested adopters. (BTW, he lost one back leg, not both.)

Patrick's surgery went well on Tuesday, but due to the bad weather, we opted to have him stay an extra night at the Lakewood Animal Hospital. Hugs to his supporters!

His foster mom could still use donations of clean used sheets, soft bath towels and washcloths. These donations can be left at the Lakewood Animal Hospital or Lakewood Animal Shelter for Patrick.

Prays for Patrick and Piper

Thank you for everyone's concern for Patrick, our frostbitten tabby, and Piper, the lost torti.

Patrick went to the Lakewood Animal Hospital on Monday night for a follow up visit. LAH ran a blood chemistry panel to look for any underlining issues and most of his results came back normal, he's just slightly anemic. Patrick appears to be about two to three years old and has a long life ahead of him. He's enjoying all of the donations of towel, soft blankets and food. The foster could still use donations of used sheets, soft bath towels and washcloths. These donations can be left at the Lakewood Animal Hospital for Patrick.

Unfortunately it appears that Patrick will need to have surgery later this month. We'll fill you in on his prognosis soon.

LOST CAT: Sadly Piper is still missing. Her owner is setting up a humane trap outside and hopes that Piper is still close to home. She's an indoor only tortoiseshell female. It's still very cold outside -so let's help find Piper!

She lives near Clifton Blvd and Hall Ave. and was last seen Sunday, Feb 23. She was not wearing a collar, but is spayed with current shots. She's almost 8 months, a sweetheart and probably very scared! She's comfortable around people and may be lured with food (especially wet or human food). Her human and feline family miss her very much.

Sorry for the delayed update on Patrick, he has had his ups and downs over the past few days with his comfort level, eating interest and litter box usage. He’s going back to the vet on Monday for a scheduled follow up visit, so we should have more information to share soon.

The foster was ecstatic by the donations left for Patrick at the Lakewood Animal Hospital and Lakewood Animal Shelter. The staff at hospital and shelter are overwhelmed by the support from the community for Patrick too - so thank you all! Patrick now has plenty of cans of Fancy Feast and soft fleece blankets, per his request. Meow!

Also we're grateful to receive daily updates from his foster, here’s the latest on his condition and spirit: 

Patrick won the hearts of all the reporters and cameramen on Tuesday. We’re so appreciate that all of the stations covered his story and for the attention they brought to seriousness of frostbite with our four-legged friends.

After the interviews, he was really worn out, but on Wednesday he was acting like a toddler according to his foster. He was always into something or wanting her undivided attention.

We also recently tested his stool and it came back negative for parasites - which is great news so we can just focus on the frostbite issues.

LOOKING FOR A FOSTER!

After months on the street, Angel was looking forward to her chance for normal life. Although she recently came down with a common feline upper respiratory infection and is now in need of a foster home to recuperate. Shelter Needs Canned Kitten Food!

The Lakewood Animal Shelter needs donations of canned wet kitten food for our baby kittens at the shelter and in foster care, like Cecilia here. Anything from Evo to Fancy Feast Kitten are kindly appreciated, chicken flavors preferred. #1lkwd

Donations can be dropped off at the shelter during adoption hours, at Pet's General on Madison Ave., or at the Lakewood Animal Hospital.

Emergency c-section for a mama kitty

On Friday morning, a sweet tabby cat at the shelter went into labour.

Unfortunately the young adult cat was in serious distress, her first kitten became stuck in the birth canal and sadly didn't make it. CCLAS rushed her to West Park Animal, where they performed an emergency c-section, because a second kitty was also stuck and feared dead.

Mama was in a lot of pain, but she and her four kittens survived the surgery. The family of five will be transferred to foster care this week.

Poor Grady

Poor Grady, collar 100, was admitted to Westpark Animal Hospital today, with a lingering URI. He's also dehydrated, thin with conjunctivitis.

Dr. Nicole is hopeful that he'll make a full cover after some TLC medical attention.

Meet Quark, collar 17

Quark (collar #17) is a very beautiful silver tabby young mama cat. After a foray out in the Metroparks, she's quite happy to be back in the care of the shelter. She's has spent the last 6 months in foster care and gets along great with the dogs and cats in her temporary home. While she may appear shy at first, she's made great strides while in foster care and no longer hides when company visits. "Skinny" Minnie

Sadly, we lost another foster kitty today, "Skinny" Minnie.

She was kindly fostered by a CCLAS supporter for the past month. From what we could tell, Minnie had a rough life from being both ear-tipped and declawed, although we know she spent her last month in a loving home, enjoying the company of her foster's dog, Guinness. She was placed into foster care because she was a malnourished senior cat, weighing only 4lbs, 14oz. She had a nice holiday weekend with her temporary family and had a new furever home lined up. Unfortunately she passed unexpectedly today while the foster was at work. She came home to find her curled up peacefully in her litter box. Foster home needed for littermates ASAP

CCLAS is desperately looking for a foster who can help nurse Thelma & Louise back to good heath. Both have fatty liver disease, from being abandon on the streets of Lakewood too long. CCLAS will cover their medical cost - daily duties include force feeding in a quiet comfortable environment. Currently they are living in a board member's small bathroom. Can you help?
